The 2005 is better than the earlier ones. I'm sad to say though that yes, we should really avoid them old ones. Got another car with bad HVAC issues and then all the other sickness came out. Well if it shifts smooth and has proof of regular service, it might be worth a shot.I don't recommend it tho.
I think you're right to be cautious about earlier models, including the 2005.
The main concern for those is the automatic transmission and I've read many owners reporting issues that led to complete failure, usually around the 100,000 to 130,000 mile mark.
If the specific 2005 MDX you're looking at has detailed service records showing the transmission has been replaced, or if it's been meticulously maintained and drives perfectly, it might be a decent option.
Take a mechanic familiar with transmission issues and do a thorough pre-purchase inspection.
Otherwise, you could be looking at a significant expense down the line!

It's a 20 year old car, so don't expect miracles, but I do agree with @H3AT that the older ones are far more problematic. I'm talking 2001, 2003 models. For the 2005 I think the only thing you'll need to be concerned about is the transmission and to check the timing belt about its condition. If it looks like it's seen better days, then you can say that the water pump hasn't been replaced.
I have a 2004 MDX Touring that I purchased new. It now has 185,000 miles and the only issues have been the power locks and horn malfunctions. regular maintenance/service per manual and it has held up very well.
